What is the most common cause of hip pain?

The most common cause of hip pain in adults is arthritis of the hip joint itself.

Arthritis of the hip could cause tenderness of the hip joint and soft tissue surrounding it. It also leads to damage of the cartilage on the surface of the joint and new bone formation around the joint, which features to the toughness and pain experienced by the person.

The other main causes of pain in young adults are:

  • Femoro-acetabular impingement - which is caused by abnormal bony growth rubbing together during specific movements.
  • Cartilage tear in the hip joint - known as a labral tear.
  • Trauma – causing a fracture.
  • Sporting injuries – leading to a tear of the hamstring muscles .
  • Inflammation of the bursa around the hip.
  • Osteonecrosis – reduced oxygen to the femoral head (hip joint) causing the death of bone tissue in the hip joint. Causes significant pain and could lead to the subsequent destruction of the joint.

Exercising for a Healthier Neck

In some cases, neck pain will go away on its own. Strained muscles, when rested, can heal normally over time. Icing the area or using heat therapy can help reduce inflammation, as can anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections, or pain medications, allowing the body to heal itself naturally.

The first step in any exercise regimen aimed at relieving neck pain should be to consult with a specialist who can diagnose your bad condition. Exercise can worsen some cervical disorders, which will only possibly cause further damage to your neck.

Once your condition is diagnosed, consult with your doctor on the right type of exercises,  physical therapist.

The Importance of Posture

Practice proper posture when you're watching TV at home, sitting in front of your computer at work, or in the car.

Whether your neck pain stems from cervical disc disease or some other disorder or injury, exercise plays an important role in decreasing symptoms, improving strength and mobility, and restoring healthy joints.

How to manage Neck Pain at Home

  • Try holding a hot water bottle or heat pack to your neck – this can help reduce the pain and any muscle contractions, although some people find cold packs offer better relief
  • Sleep on a low, firm pillow at night – using too many pillows may force your neck to bend unnaturally
  • Check your posture – bad posture can aggravate the pain, and it may have caused it in the first place
  • Avoid driving if you find it difficult to turn your head – this may prevent you being able to view traffic
  • If your neck is stiff or twisted, try some neck exercises – gently tense your neck muscles as you tilt your head up and down and from side to side, and as you carefully twist your neck from left to right; these exercises will help strengthen your neck muscles and improve your range of movement
  • If the pain or stiffness does not improve after a few days, or if you are worried your neck pain could have a more serious cause, you should see a doctor or Physiotherapist without further delay.

 Tips for Neck pain:

1.    Make sure you have upright posture while sitting and standing.

2.    Take intervals from your work, driving or any activity where your neck is seized in the same position for a long period of time.

3.    Try relaxation practices to help comfort from any tightness in your neck.

4.    Ensure turn to one side while getting up from sleeping position.

5.    A heating pad for your neck.

6.    Use towel roll under the neck during flat lying.

7.    Use pillow of normal thickness in side lying position.

8.    Use a seat belt when in a car.

9.    Make sure your mattress is fairly stable not very soft mattress which could result in bent neck  while you sleep.

10.                  You should withdraw your shoulders (move shoulders backward) atleast every hour.

Avoid actions for Neck pain:

1.    Avoid sleeping on your front and make sure your head is in line with your body (not tilted to the side) if you sleep on your side.

2.    Don’t bend your neck for a prolonged period of time.

3.    Avoid sitting for prolonged period of time in stressful posture.

4.    Do not lift heavy weights on back.

5.    Always; take breaks while driving.

6.    Avoid habit of holding the mobile on one shoulder and leaning at it for a long time.

7.    Do not take many pillows to keep your head level with your body, while sleeping.

8.    In order to turn around, do not twist your neck or the body; instead turn around by moving your feet first.

Try this for instant relief

Stand or sit active tall with both feet on the floor.

Lower your chin to your chest by dropping the head.

While in this tucked position, push your head and jaw back and hold it for five beats. You will feel the stretch down your neck and back.

Dr Gaurav Jain says this stretch opens up the space between vertebrae and clears nerve routes. It will get some breathing room for compressed or pinched and will get some relief.

How to get rid of neck pain at home

Follow these simple steps to relieve from minor neck pain:

  • Apply ice for the first few days. After that, apply  a heating pad.
  • Take OTC pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Take a few days off from sports, activities that exaggerate your symptoms, and heavy lifting.
  • Exercise your neck every day.
  • Use good posture.
  • Don’t holding the phone between your neck and shoulder.
  • Change your position often. Don’t stand or sit in one position for too long.
  • Get a gentle neck massage.
  • Use a special neck pillow suggested by physiotherapist for sleeping.
  • Don’t use a neck brace or collar without your doctor’s approval.
  • Many people experience neck pain because of poor posture and muscle strain. In these cases, your neck pain should go away if you practice good posture and rest your neck muscles when they’re sore.

Make an appointment with your doctor if your neck pain isn’t improving with home treatments.
